For hundreds of years, Kabbalah has been perceived as a body of secret theoretical and practical knowledge concerning creation, the divine world, and human interaction with it. This course offering will introduce you to the major ideas and practices of the Kabbalah from a practical standpoint. Kabbalah offers tools that can help you on your spiritual journey regardless of your current faith practice.
The course will examine basic Kabbalistic themes such as the theory of the Sefirot (Tree of Life), prophetic Kabbalistic techniques and practical Kabbalah. It will introduce major Kabbalistic works and movements, including The Zohar (The Book of Splendor), Lurianic Kabbalah, Hasidism, and the contemporary revival of popular Kabbalah.
An important concept of Kabbalah is the understanding that we are here on this earth for two specific purposes: 1) To perform a radical transformation of our souls 2) To join God on His mission of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World). The Kabbalists teach that each of us have a unique opportunity to partner with God to bring about the Age and Consciousness of Messiah. We will study the precepts and practices that they believe will bring this about.
The aim of this course is to introduce students with no background in Kabbalah or Jewish thought to the major ideas and practices of the Kabbalah in their historical and cultural settings.
